“Detox” programs are being promoted as a cure-all but they need to be approached with caution.
There is no miracle remedy that will erase the results of years (or even weeks) of convenience food, rich restaurant fare and medications.
If you have spent any time on the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) of coffee and bagels for breakfast, fast food for lunch and dessert after dinner then you are likely to be deficient in the nutrients your body needs to detoxify.
Nausea, heart burn, fatigue, foggy thinking, irritability, skin problems and intestinal issues can all be related to not having the necessary nutrients for your body to go through it’s normal detoxification process.
Already on the Perfect Diet?
Are you feeling frustrated with your health because you’re already on the perfect diet? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The important thing to understand is that diet alone is rarely enough to make up for a nutrient deficiency.
If you lived on junk food as teen chances are good you still have some vitamins or minerals that are sub par. Or if you were on repeated doses of antibiotics the healthy bacteria in your intestines may not have bounced back to let you absorb nutrients as well as you should.
You Can’t Detox a Depleted Body
So, if you’re eating well, and still feeling poorly, I would not recommend jumping into doing a Detox, Cleanse or anything that asks your body to do more work.
The place to start is to find out which nutrients you are deficient in, because your body needs to be fully resourced to tackle more work.
There are lab tests you can do to identify specific nutrient deficiencies and intestinal imbalances. But even without doing lab tests there are things you can do at home to help your body detox without feeling worse.
