Perimenopause symptoms often indicate an underlying hormone imbalance. In recent years, concerns over the effects of environmental estrogens on hormone balance have been growing.
Dr. Christiane Northrup cites environmental estrogens as a contributing factor to the phenomenon of estrogen dominance, which is involved with several common perimenopause symptoms.
If you’re concerned about perimenopause symptoms, here’s how to avoid environmental estrogens:
- Organochlorines – found in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and pesticide production, and also used in bleaches, disinfectants, and dry cleaning. SOLUTION: Find a Green Dry Cleaner and use biodegradable cleaning products.
- Phthalate esters – found in inks used on plastic, and foil food wrappers, baby formula, some cheese, margarine, chips, vinyl flooring, and emulsion paint. SOLUTION: reduce packaged food, choose food in glass containers when possible.
- Pthalates break down very slowly and are found in rivers, groundwater and drinking water. SOLUTION: use filtered drinking water.
- Fragrances. Many environmental estrogens are merely listed as “fragrances” rather than by name. SOLUTION: avoid scented detergents and solid room fresheners.
