Many sufferers of chronic acid reflux symptoms seek relief through medication. But are these medications safe for long term use? And do they address the underlying cause of your acid reflux?

What is a PPI?

The safety of long term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like Prilosec and Nexium, has come into question. These drugs are associated with impaired calcium absorption and an increase in susceptibility to bone fractures. PPIs can also interfere with magnesium absorption leading to deficiency and heart arrhythmia. By decreasing the naturally acidic environment of the stomach they can increase the risk of contracting a Clostridium difficile infection, which can be serious.

While PPIs relieve the burning feeling associated with acid reflux symptoms, they do not eliminate the risk for developing Barret’s esophagus, a precancerous condition, as Dr. Tom Demeester notes in the Huffington Post. These harmful effects are more likely to occur if the medications are taken for longer periods. The manufacturers actually recommend a maximum of 14 days on the medications, but many people are looking for longer term relief and end up using them for longer periods.

PPIs may mask the symptoms of acid reflux while failing to address the underlying cause. Many lifestyle factors like alcohol use, excessive caffeine use, and stress as well as possible food intolerances may play a role in the development of acid reflux.
