Our office sees primarily women and among these women a big complaint seems to be losing or thinning of their hair. Hair loss can be caused by several factors but research is showing that the most common is hypothyroidism and insulin resistance.
Cause #1 For Thinning Hair
I’ll start with insulin resistance, in women this means that your body’s testosterone levels are elevated which in turn causes:
- hair loss
- thinning hair
- excess facial hair
- a deepened voice
- agression
- other male characteristics
Why is happens is because insulin resistance actually triggers an enzyme called 17,20 lyase in women that sends your body into overdrive making mass amounts testosterone. Insulin resistance is more common today than you might think. It actually is considered a stepping-stone to diabetes. Insulin resistance is brought on by overeating or a diet that is high in sugary, starchy foods such as:
- breads
- rice
- pasta
- pastries
- potatoes
- soda
- sweeten coffee drinks, etc.
So basically what happens is in order to lower your high blood sugar when you consume these foods your body becomes exhausted from these constant surges of insulin and eventually they refuse the intake of insulin.
Cause #2 For Thinning Hair
The second potential cause for thinning hair is hypothyroidism. This means that you could be suffering from thyroid function. Be on the lookout for these other symptoms commonly associated with hypothyroidism:
- fatigue
- weight gain
- constipation
- cold hands
- cold feet
- low libido
- depression
Hashimoto’s
Using thyroid medications may help with halting or reversing hair loss but come with other horrible side effects. Also, if you fall into the 90% of the American population that have an autoimmune disease, Hashimoto’s is among these and common medications won’t do the job. Hashimoto’s causes hypothyroidism and if not addressed properly your hair loss will only get worse.
Cause #3 For Thinning Hair
The last cause could be both. It is very common to see women that suffer from hypothyroidism and from insulin resistance. So that means that there could be two reasons that your hair is falling out. Natural remedies and therapies have been proven to work with the addition of dietary changes and lifestyle adjustments.
With the help of scientifically backed herbs, compounds, and nutrients we have seen major changes in stabilizing blood sugar and even reversing insulin resistance altogether. These remedies are known to stimulate blood flow to the head which can renew hair growth.
