Are you feeling drained at the end of the day (or even the beginning!) and want to get your energy back? Try these five natural tips to reclaim your energy. They are written specifically for women in perimenopause but are beneficial for anyone.

1. Eat antioxidant-rich foods.

Antioxidants have received a lot of attention for their key role in health. A 2006 study  from the University of Alicante in Spain confirmed their importance for women with perimenopause symptoms. Best sources? – try increasing blueberries, pomegranates, red peppers and other brightly colored fruits and veggies in your food choices.

2. Get your B-vitamins.

The B vitamins are essential for energy production in your body. Low levels of vitamin B-12 especially are associated with fatigue and depression. The different B-vitamins are found in many different fresh, whole foods so variety is important. If you are vegetarian you may need to supplement B-12 since it is found mostly in animal products and in small amounts in unpasteurized fermented foods.

If you supplement B-12 be sure to get the natural methyl-cobalamin, not the synthetic cyano-cobalamin. With the advent of genetic testing we have found that more than a third of us have a gene mutation that means our bodies cannot use the synthetic form of B-12.

3. Exercise.

A recent study, published in the journal Menopause, found that while exercise doesn’t relieve hot flashes, women in perimenopause who exercised felt better overall and got better sleep. Quality sleep is the foundation for healthy energy.

4. Make time to relax.

Stress is a huge contributor to perimenopause symptoms. You deserve time to relax, and remember: it pays off in the energy it will give you later. Go to a movie with friends, schedule a walk at the park or play a game with your kids – it will recharge you.

5. Change your attitude.

Dr. Christiane Northrup agrees. Worry and stress cause your adrenals to pump out more stress hormones. Consciously focusing on positive thoughts that bring up feelings of love and wellbeing will counteract this process. The Institute of HeartMath has developed a simple one-minute technique called Freeze Frame to help you do exactly that.

Dr. Marina Rose uses a holistic approach to help women, in and around the city of San Francisco, CA, to get their energy back. She uses leading edge techniques to identify the key factors that will make the biggest improvement in each individual case.

  1. I love reading your blog! I knew that the Methyl- B12 was the better form, but I had no idea it had to do with a genetic mutation.

    1. Thanks for the comment 🙂 The methyl form is considered the active form so it is good for a number of reasons even if you don’t have the gene mutation.
