Heartburn is a generic term that people use to describe discomfort after eating. Some common symptoms are:
- Burning pain
- Burping
- Nausea
- Trouble swallowing
- Chronic sore throat
- Regurgitation
Paying attention to the specific type of discomfort can help you figure out the underlying cause.
For example, burning pain just below the sternum is a common symptom of gastritis which is often called acid reflux. This can be misleading since the pain is not caused by too much acid but my too little protection.
While many forms of indigestion respond to the use of the appropriate digestive enzymes, burning pain can indicate underlying damage to the stomach lining, that must be healed before using strong enzymes. A supplement called DGL had been proven to be very effective to repair damaged stomach linings.
If your symptoms are burping, nausea, or a sense of fullness or tightness at the top of the stomach, this could indicate a hiatal hernia or a problem with your gallbladder.
Having these symptoms does NOT mean you should take an acid blocker, which masks the symptoms but does nothing to correct the root cause.
How do you get a hiatal hernia?
- Prolonged wearing of tight jeans or tight elastic (like control-top pantyhose)
- Excess weight around the middle
- Pregnancy
- Abdominal surgery
- Slouching posture
Dr. Marina Rose, who practices in Los Altos, CA, uses a special manual technique to address hiatal hernias. They usually require only 1-2 treatment sessions.
One of the best ways to understand the underlying nutritional cause of your symptoms is to know which foods and nutrients you have trouble digesting and those you are deficient in.
