Have you gone to the doctor with hormonal symptoms – whether PMS or menopause – and been given a prescription?
If you’re like many women today, you have been prescribed “the pill” for symptoms related to hormone imbalance. Hormones are commonly prescribed for symptoms like irritability, heavy bleeding, acne, breast tenderness and bloating.
Whether it is the birth control pill or a form of HRT (hormone replacement therapy), it may actually be making the problem worse.
What you may not realize is that your hormone problems may stem from issues in your digestive and elimination systems.
Natural health guru, Dr. Christiane Northrup agrees that sluggish elimination is an important factor in estrogen build-up and hormone imbalance. When you have a slow transit time (fewer than one bowel movement a day) you can develop an unhealthy bacterial growth that results in a build-up of toxins. These toxins get reabsorbed into the bloodstream and sent back to the liver for detoxifying.
The liver also has the important job of breaking down or metabolizing hormones once they have done their job in the body.
But if your liver is busy breaking down toxins from the gut, your digestive problems now become hormone problems. To get to the bottom of this, you need more than just a pill. You need a holistic health care approach that will look at all the factors including:
- whether you have taken medications in the past that have effected liver or colon function
- evaluating digestive function so you know which foods are best for you
- the best supplements, based on your exam results, for restoring your liver and digestive tract to healthy function
Since your adrenal gland is what your body calls on for “emergency reserve hormones”, it is often helpful to assess adrenal gland function also.
Dr. Marina Rose, DC who practices in Los Altos, CA uses Chiropractic care and Functional Nutrition to help women in the Bay Area and across the country with symptoms of hormone imbalance to improve their digestion and resolve the root cause of their hormone troubles.

Once again, very useful information. I’m always amazed when I hear that traditional medicine with it’s pills and horror tests aren’t necessarily the right answer.

Kimmer, yes, I see our current conventional medical system as a huge departure from both traditional medicine (like ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, European herbs) AND from science. It’s crazy how many “harmless” drugs like acetaminophen cause death and disability each year. We’ve really veered away from First, do no harm. The good news is there’s a huge move toward using proven methods to IMPROVE FUNCTION, rather than just treat disease.
so many women don’t know what is “normal” for them because their systems have been out of whack for so long from the stress of our hurried lives.
No one can prepare you for menopause because you don’t believe it till it happens to you. I was one of those non believer…Oh, that won’t happen to me…people. Now I just want to figure out how to get back in balance. I look forward to our session Dr Marina!
