There is one important factor that contributes to perimenopause that many women don’t realize.

Stress is a key contributor to perimenopause because of its effects on the adrenals. When you experience stress the adrenal glands release cortisol. Cortisol then competes with the sex hormone estrogen for its hormonal precursor.

Your body prioritizes making cortisol, leaving less of the building blocks for making other hormones, like estrogen and progesterone.

One of the causes of perimenopause symptoms is a lowered estrogen level. So when you’re under stress, especially long term, your body has a hard time keeping estrogen levels up high enough so that you don’t experience perimenopause symptoms. In fact extended stress can lead to adrenal fatigue, as Dr. Christiane Northrup also recognizes.

Dr. Marina Rose has helped women with perimenopause symptoms and other challenging, chronic health conditions in and around the city of San Francisco, CA.

  1. I am 48 and think that I am experiencing perimenopause. My mood changes frequently and I am having the most trouble with that…more than weight gain, etc… When something upsets me…I feel such a rage inside that I am not sure how to handle it. I try to let things go but I feel as though I am faking and I am still boiling mad inside. I do take st. john’s wort (300-600 mgs.) when I feel extremely angry and that seems to help for awhile. Any suggestions on what non-chemical supplement may help? I need some answers…please help.

    1. Trouble with irritability and moods can indicate an adrenal imbalance. Taking herbs like ginseng, holy basil and rhodiola can be a good overall support. Many of our patients find that with the results from their Adrenal Stress Index test they can do more targeted supplements for more dramatic improvement.
