“The pill” is the most commonly prescribed form of birth control, but some doctors prescribe it for other common conditions related to hormone balance.
Birth control pills have been classified as carcinogenic by The World Health Organization. The pills with combined estrogen and progestin (as well as combined-hormone HRT), specifically, have been labeled as carcinogens. This classification is based on a review of the scientific literature conducted by twenty-one scientists in 2005. This review found that the rates of cervical cancer, breast cancer, and liver cancer were increased. Yet, the review also established a potential protective effect against endometrial and ovarian cancers.
While these increased risks are concerning, many women choosing the birth control pill for contraception may still find the benefits outweigh the potential risks, as Dr. Christiane Northrup also points out. But, what about the women taking the pill for other reasons?
Regardless of why you take the pill it is important to understand how if affects the body in order to lower the risk of complications. Holistic health care practitioners find that using herbs and nutrients to support the liver, gallbladder and intestinal tract greatly reduces the negative effects of taking the pill.
