The word Perimenopause is thrown around so much that you might think it is a disease.
It is actually just a word to describe a variety of symptoms that happen over a span of about twenty years in a woman’s life – from her early 30’s into her 50’s.
Here are the common symptoms that women experience during this time:
- Hot flashes/ Night sweats
- Irregular periods
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Anxiety/ Irritability
- Weight gain
- Headaches
As you can see some of these symptoms are the same as PMS and many of them can be related to other factors like adrenal stress, nutritional imbalances or neurotransmitter imbalances.
The important thing when dealing with perimenopause symptoms is to dig in and figure out what’s really going on. A simple saliva test can give you valuable information about whether your adrenal glands could be contributing to your perimenopause symptoms.
According to Andrew Weil, MD many perimenopause symptoms respond well to a nutritional approach.
If a conventional medical doctor has a cranky 40 year old woman in her office with normal lab tests the most likely diagnosis is… perimenopause. And the treatment is likely to be the birth control pill and an antidepressant.
Before settling for that diagnosis make sure you’ve looked for the underlying cause.
Dr. Marina Rose uses a natural, nutrition-based approach to help women with perimenopause symptoms as well as other challenging health conditions, in and around the city of San Jose, CA.
