Acid reflux symptoms occur when the stomach acids that are required for digestion rise up into the esophagus.

This can happen because the valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus is not working properly. The esophagus is the long tube that connects your throat to your stomach and it shouldn’t be exposed to stomach acid.

Sometimes, after eating you may feel a burning sensation in your chest and a sour taste in your mouth. This is due to the mixture of swallowed food, bile and the stomach acid rising upward from the stomach. Ideally, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), at the end of the esophagus should close once the objects have passed through the esophagus into the stomach.

There are several reasons that the LES might not close properly or night open at the wrong time, increasing the probability of acid climbing upward. Here are the most common causes:

According to Dr. Deepak Chopra, the conventional medical approach of medication and surgery is not always effective for acid reflux symptoms,  “that’s why your best bet is to make healthy lifestyle choices that will help you avoid getting GERD and get the symptoms under control early on.”
