Dr. Marina Rose

If you have ever experienced Gallbladder symptoms, you know just how painful they can be. Usually when patients experience these discomforting symptoms, surgery is often the next step in hopes to eliminate any pain. However, did you know that even after your Gallbladder is removed that you can still experience those very same symptoms?

Gallbladder removal surgery, called a cholecystectomy, is a very common surgical procedure in the US. However, it is possible for the symptoms of gallstones to mimic other forms of indigestion, as Dr. Andrew Weil also suggests. In this case, removing the gallbladder does not alleviate symptoms because the gallbladder was not the original cause.

After removal of the gallbladder, there is a possibility of developing Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. With (SOD), spasming or scarring of the sphincter between the pancreatic and bile ducts and the large intestine causes symptoms similar to the original gallbladder symptoms. Symptoms often include abdominal pain, nausea and even vomiting.
