There’s nothing like a little indulgence when you’ve made it through another stressful day.

There is nothing wrong with breaking the rules of good health a little here and there, if your body has a good reserve of resources from to buffer the effects. But if you’ve been burning the candle at both ends your body may not have the resilience to adapt to even minor indulgences without causing symptoms, like acid reflux.

  1. Alcohol – In moderation, some alcohol like red wine, is known to offer health benefits like antioxidants. But even one glass of alcohol can bring on an episode of acid reflux symptoms if you have underlying digestive issues.
  2. Caffeine – Even though many people swear by their ritual cup of coffee in the morning, cutting the coffee may ease heart burn. Other caffeine containing beverages like tea and soda may also trigger reflux.
  3. Chocolate  – The bitter truth about this sweet treat is that it too, could be a trigger for acid reflux.
  4. Peppermint  – You’ll find it at home and on the grocery store aisles in products ranging from ice cream to breath mints. Peppermint actually relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter (the LES) that keeps the content of the stomach held inside of it.

It may be hard to say goodbye to some of these enjoyable treats, but without them you may find your acid reflux symptoms become more manageable, as Dr. Mark Hyman also notes.
